Erythritol

Erythritol is a sweetener that's made from natural ingredients and can be used in place of sugar. It occurs naturally in small amounts in some fruits and fermented foods, but the majority of erythritol is produced commercially through fermentation of glucose by yeast.

Erythritol is commonly used as a sweetener in foods like chewing gum, candies and ice cream—it's often added to sugar-free products. Erythritol has about 60-70% of the sweetness of sucrose (table sugar) but contains almost no calories. Erythritol has been approved by the FDA since 2001.

How does it compare to table sugar?

Erythritol is 60-70% as sweet as sugar, meaning you need to use less of it to get the same level of sweetness. It also has no impact on blood sugar levels and is excreted in urine unchanged. It is not metabolized by the body and therefore does not cause an insulin response. Erythritol has also been shown to inhibit tooth decay.

Because of its low glycemic index (GI), erythritol has also been shown to be well tolerated by children with diabetes.

Erythritol is a great alternative to sugar that can be used in many products!
